Snape's Canon Clothing(Or: No. Billowing black robes are not synonymous with frock coats.)I created this as a visual complement to my Detailed Descriptions page, because I am sick of reading fan fiction about Professor Snape in silly Muggle clothes. All right, I did it to show off his wardrobe a bit, as well... All fanfic writers with an interest in keeping Snape in character will find this useful, or inspiring at the least. Anyone who likes sticking him in *shudders* black silk boxers and calling him Sevie can sod off right now. |
The prowling professor prefers:The billowing black cloak:Professor Snape wears a billowing black cloak (sometimes it swishes). His cloak is hooded, as demonstrated by this scene in Philosopher's Stone: 'A hooded figure came swiftly down the front steps of the castle...' 'He threw his cloak over his head...'
~ The billowing black travelling cloak:In Order of the Phoenix, Professor Snape arrives at Grimmauld Place wearing a travelling cloak. It is also black. An example of a travelling cloak:
'He turned to leave, his black travelling cloak billowing behind him...' - Order of the Phoenix. ~ The billowing black robes:Professor Snape wears high-collared black robes; not frock coats, and not tight black trousers with hundreds and thousands of buttons. In fact, as demonstrated in Philosopher's Stone, and in Order of the Phoenix, Professor Snape has never worn anything under his robes, apart from underwear. Most wizards don't, as demonstrated by good old Archie, in Goblet of Fire: 'Snape was holding his robes above his knees. One of his legs was bloody and mangled...' - Philosopher's Stone. ''I'm not putting them [trousers] on,' said old Archie in indignation. 'I like a healthy breeze around my privates, thanks.' - Goblet of Fire. Note: He wears green during every Slytherin quidditch game, and that is the only time he wears any other colour, apart from black (or a shade thereof), in the books: 'Professor Snape sat in the very front row, wearing green like everyone else..' - Prisoner of Azkaban.

The professor's pyjama party:Professor Snape wears a long grey nightshirt. I am pretty sure that it is a grey nightshirt, and not a greying or greyish white nightshirt, since JKR specifically wrote 'grey', as opposed to Snape's underwear, which was 'greying'. 'He [Snape] was wearing a long grey nightshirt, and he looked livid...' - Goblet of Fire.
